Gerhard von Graevenitz (1934 - 1983 ) was a German kinetic artist, representative of Op-Art and early computer artist. He studied economics at the University of Frankfurt am Main and art at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. From 1959 to 1960 he was editor of the journal nota. In 1962, was co-founder of the international movement nouvelle tendance (New Tendencies). Since 1970 he lived and worked in Amsterdam. His first works in 1959 were monochrome reliefs. This was followed in 1960 by the design of kinetic objects. In 1962, he began to experiment with the new technical possibilities of computer graphics to produce geometrically ordered dither patterns. In 1968, Gerhard von Graevenitz was represented with three objects at the 4th documenta in Kassel. Graevenitz was interested in the phenomena of perception: form and color, line and surface. In his kinetic objects he pointed to the relationship between structure and movement, chance and order.
