Fertility or the loss of power is reflected in opulent or cut hair, and status, gender or the membership of a group is signalled by open or concealed hair. Anonymous, Head of Woman, c. 240 A.D. © Suermondt-Ludwig Museum, Aachen, Photo: Philipp Groß
Deemed the seat of the soul, hair was a symbol for the elemental vitality of people or a central bearer of erotic messages. Anonymous, Exaltation of Maria Magdalena (Maria Aegyptiaca), um 1480 © Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum, Aachen, Photo: Anne Gold, Aachen
Hair has played a particular role within all religions, symbolising humility by cutting hair or getting closer to the Almighty with real hair on crucifixes in the Christian Middle Ages. Tilman Riemenschneider, Death of Maria, c. 1515 © Sammlung Marks/Thomée, Deutschland, Photo: Anne Gold, Aachen
Moral of the story: Lust is not the sin, but the weakness that leads him to sin: unable to resist Delilah, he tells her the secret of his strength, betraying his body and his God simultaneously. The hero’s legendary physical strength does not come from within, but is a divine gift. Weakness, both physical and moral, is the human state; strength comes from God. Samson and Delilah, Peter Paul Rubens, Probably 1609, Oil on panel, 52.1 x 50.5cm, Cincinnati Art Museum

The art of the 20th and 21st centuries discovered new meanings in hair. Presented repulsively or else with the intention of stirring up desire, surprising in an isolated context or fitting into everyday life, hair is now seen in a great diversity of forms.
