Hasui Kawase (1883 – 1957) , the best known proponents of the 新版画 New Prints movement, was the main inspiration for postwar Japanese animation art. Kawase´s style, which he himself considered realistic, was influenced by his training in Western painting with Okada Saburōsuke. Hayao Miyazaki´s movies often seem inspired by Kawase´s style with its finely deatiled studies of clouds, trees and traditional buildings. Kawase created mostly landscape prints based on sketches he made in Tokyo and during his extensive travels in Japan. Kawase studied ukiyo-e with Kiyokata Kaburagi. For forty years, Hasui worked with publisher Shōzaburō Watanabe.
