Flags are symbols of identification. Designed at the time of the formation of a country, they transport feelings of belonging and pride, with colors, patterns and signs standing for values and ideals. However, their symbolic meaning for a nation state is also regularly taken by populists to further their own interests. Inevitably, all countries have profoundly changed since their flag was designed. What if a flag would instead be a more realistic, constantly updated symbol, representing the current development of a country, its growing complexity, its interweaving strands of history?
