Contingency, Complexity, Symmetry
& collect
To research the appeal of Arabesque ornaments and color combinations, we developed an algorithm which can generate Arabesque patterns with different complexities and tested the outcomes with a group of people.

For the perception of ornaments as pleasant and harmonious, complexity, symmetry and contingency play important roles. Different configurations of contingent compositions also evoke different historical and cultural connotations - they can be are perceived as Gaelic, Medieval or Islamic.

Compositions with higly complex, non-contingent connections are perceived as chaotic and unpleasant.
