Paysages
& collect
Etymologically, a "paysage" (landscape) is the arrangement of lines, of characters, of forms in a limited space, in a "pays" (country). It is a portion of terrestrial land, represented or looked at by an observer; it implies a viewpoint. The notion of "paysage" has a strong aesthetic dimension, both in a pictorial and a literary sense, as representation. The landscape also manifests the politics of land use in a geopolitical sense. The landscape is first and foremost apprehended visually, but scents and sounds also change its perception ("paysage sonore", for instance, means soundscape). By extension, in expressions like the "political landscape" or the "media landscape", the term may designate a contextual whole, a particular vision at a given time, as a "paysage" is constantly changing.
