Covid-19

A cultural study of the visualisation of the virus causing the global Coronavirus pandemic.

Coronaviruses are enveloped viruses with a single-stranded RNA genome. The diameter of the virus particles is around 120 nanometers (120 billionth of a meter). In comparison, the diameter of a human hair is a thousand times larger, about 100.000 nanometers. These sizes are not inaccessible to us - companies such as Intel are mass-producing transistors for computer chips which are just 14 nanometers across. How do different cultures try to make visual sense of a threat which cannot bee seen by the naked eye?
