"Dubai seemed like a very special place, but I couldn't see any photos of it. It was always depicted through 3D models, miniatures, drawings. Everything seemed unreal and weird. They had the privilege of being able to create a city from scratch, from nothing. The city had the space and money to enable it to realise the dreams of a society. They have built a city by appropriating Western symbols and taking them to the extreme, to the limit. The result is a thematic and fictionalised city which, in many cases, borders on the absurd."
Aleix Plademunt was born in Girona, Catalonia, in 1980. In 1998, he started to study Technical Engineering but switched to study Photography at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. He received a scholarship to study at the Universidad de las Americas, and the Fotopress09 Scholarship to create the project DubaiLand. He has had solo exhibitions in France, Spain, Venezuela and the UK and he has been part of group exhibitions in Germany, America, Cambodia and Spain.
