Inoue Yûichi (1916-1985) became renowned for his action painting calligraphy resulting in one character writings. After learning calligraphy from Ueda Sôkyû, he gave his first exhibition in 1951. His expressive style of painting won him great acclaim both domestically and abroad. For Robert Motherwell, Yûichi was one of the few great artists of the second half of the twentieth century.
