Karel Martens is a Dutch designer and teacher. After training at the school of art in Arnhem, he has worked as a freelance graphic designer, specializing in typography. He was the graphic designer of the magazine Oase. He tought at the school of art at Arnhem, at the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht and was a visiting lecturer in the graphic design department at the School of Art, Yale University. Together with Wigger Bierma, he started the Werkplaats Typografie course. He won the H.N. Werkman Prize (1993) for the design of Oase, the Dr A.H. Heineken Prize for Art (1996), the Gold Medal at the Leipzig Book Fair (1998), and several other distinctions.
