Ernst Ludwig Kirchner - Master of Color
& collect
"I can’t work rationally; I’m too much a colour man (Farbenmensch) for that." said Ernst Ludwig Kirchner about himself. The German Expressionist painter who is considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century and a pioneering artist of Die Brücke group, Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938) has made a significant contribution to the revolutionary use of color. Now the Pinakothek der Moderne houses 19 paintings by the artist making the institution the most extensive holder of the painter´s work. One might hastily conclude that Expressionist paintings are products of immediate impulses and spontaneity, but this exhibition argues that Expressionist paintings were, in fact, executed with careful planning and calculated methods. A special exhibition "Farbenmensch Kirchner" is on view at Sammlung Moderne Kunst at the Pinakothek der Moderne throughout this summer until August 31st to examine Kirchner´s color theory, his techniques using industrially manufactured tube paints to achieve his own unique brilliance in his painting.
